How do I set-up counselling sessions?

We accept self-referrals as well as referrals from many organizations in our community. We generally respond to inquiries within 72 standard business hours. Just click to Connect Now.


What will the first session consist of?

After your free 20 minute initial phone consult you will then book your 50 minute initial session in our office, over secure video, or in setting that best supports you to achieve your goals, and promotes your safety and comfort. During your initial session we will discuss your hopes for the counselling process and the journey that led you to this moment in time. We will discuss a plan of care and provide immediate resources as needed. Click here for more information on Types of Sessions.


What if I can’t afford many sessions?

During your initial session we will review your available benefits and how to claim these benefits. We will also discuss what local, provincial and federal programs you may be interested in. Our hope is to assist each client to access counselling even if it isn’t provided by us.


What if my child or youth refuses to meet you?

At Central Island Counselling we believe it is our role to find a way to connect with each child or youth on their level. This often takes a great deal of finesse. Engagement and trust building are the first priorities when meeting with your child or youth.


I’m afraid that counselling will make things worse, is this possible?

Many people fear that their upsetting emotions and behaviours will increase if they initiate counselling. At Central Island Counselling we use a Trauma Informed approach to measure and pace your response to the counselling process. We know that you need to function in your daily life while working toward improved health. As you develop more tools and strategies you will find a greater ability to cope and manage your emotions.


How do I set-up the video sessions?

At Central Island Counselling we use the Jane platform and the Microsoft Teams platform for video sessions both platforms are free for the user and accessible on all devices. Instructions and a link will be sent to you when you book your video session.


What if I need help now and I can’t wait for a session?

If you are in Nanaimo, please consider the Nanaimo Crisis Clinic-Walk In or your local emergency room. You can also call the Vancouver Island Crisis Line at 1-888-494-3888. We also have an extensive list of resources on our website under Additional Resources.


What payment methods do you accept?

We accept credit cards, email money transfers and funding from third party payees. We can also directly bill some extended medical plans.
